Caribbean beats to transform Airlie Beach Esplanade

Download in Word format

AIRLIE Beach's Esplanade is set to resemble a scene from the Caribbean when the hundreds of revelers flock to the annual Parrothead Street Party on Sunday, August 17.

The street party, organised by the Airlie Beach Hotel, is a highlight of Airlie Beach Race Week which transforms the town into a sailing mecca.

The Esplanade will come alive with Jimmy Buffett music, calypso tunes, food stalls and bars.

The term "parrothead" refers to a person who loves music legend Jimmy Buffett and enjoys a tropical lifestyle, often with a Margarita in hand. The signature dress of a "parrothead" is none other than a parrot hat and tropical attire.

Airlie Beach Hotel Manager Mark Bell said the event was a celebration of the laid-back party lifestyle Airlie was renowned for.

"The street party is for everyone - you don't have to be a No. 1 Jimmy Buffett fan to join in the fun," Mr Bell said.

"Airlie Beach Race Week is a huge event for the town and the street party is a great way for the whole community to be involved and get behind it.

"We have sourced quality music acts to provide the live entertainment to get the crowd moving and grooving.

"A prize will go to the best Parrothead dress-up so we urge you to dust off those floral shirts and put your best tropical ensemble together."

Award-winning Australian country music artist Darren Coggan will perform a set of predominantly Jimmy Buffett tunes as well as a mix of other covers and originals. Coggan has featured in roles in the touring shows of Grease, Happy Days and Shout, and has appeared on TV with acting roles in a number of shows including All Saints.

Coggan will be supported by Queensland calypso artist Alvin Rostant, who has performed in concerts around Australia and internationally and is renowned for working the crowd

The street party starts at 5pm and there is a $3 entry fee.
